Synopsis

Argyria : Diffuse blue nails, Sclera/bulbar conjunctiva color change, Silver compound exposure, Photodistributed
Argyria refers to the deposition of silver or silver-containing compounds within tissue(s). Argyria may occur locally due to direct contact with silver-containing materials or as a generalized phenomenon when there is systemic dissemination of the silver. The features of argyria become apparent from 6 months to several years following initial exposure to the product containing silver. The pigmentation is irreversible.

Argyria involving the eye may be referred to as ocular argyrosis. Localized ocular argyrosis may result from the use of silver-containing eye drops (eg, Argyrol) or cosmetics, or conjunctival discoloration may be the first sign of systemic argyria. The cornea may also be involved.
