Balanoposthitis is a condition where balanitis (inflammation of the glans penis) and posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin) coexist. This condition is a common occurrence in uncircumcised adult males.

Most of the time the etiology of the condition is unknown. It may be a manifestation of diabetes, a candidal infection or a contact dermatitis, either by primary irritation (eg, frequent washes with antiseptics) or allergic in nature (eg, secondary to latex from condoms). Poor hygiene or large amounts of smegma production have been implicated as causative factors, but there is no proof for this theory. Unless diabetes is present, no systemic symptoms are present. A hidden intra-urethral syphilitic chancre may cause balanitis or balanoposthitis.

Balanoposthitis presents as redness, itching, and constant irritation of the glans penis and of the mucosal aspect of the foreskin. Sexual intercourse frequently aggravates it, interfering with the well-being of the patient.

If the condition is neglected, erosions may appear in the involved areas. This is referred to as erosive balanoposthitis.
