Bier spots, also known as angiospastic macules or physiologic anemic macules, are small, asymptomatic macules that are lighter than the surrounding skin and that may come and go. They are found most commonly on the arms and legs of young adults aged 20-40 years, but cases have been described in the pediatric and geriatric populations. There does not appear to be a sex, racial, or genetic correlation.
No definitive pathophysiology has been identified for Bier spots, but it is widely thought to be an amplified physiological, vasoconstrictive response.
