Synopsis

Cephalohematoma is a subperiosteal hematoma caused by rupture of the diploic veins of the skull during a prolonged or difficult labor or delivery, especially those requiring vacuum assistance. The swelling may not become apparent for hours or days after birth. Severe lesions may be associated with underlying skull fracture. Rarely, infection of the collection has developed. Occasionally, the hemorrhage can calcify.
