Synopsis

Floppy eyelid syndrome (FES) is a relatively uncommon ocular condition characterized by floppy, rubbery, and easily everted upper eyelids. It is usually seen in overweight, middle-aged men. Patients present with complaints of ocular redness, blurry vision, irritation, itching, burning, and a stringy/ropy mucoid discharge, all of which may be unilateral or asymmetric. A fair percentage of those affected suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Complaints of loud snoring, gasping for air, erratic sleep patterns, chronic somnolence, and morning headaches suggest OSA. These patients' past history often includes meibomian gland dysfunction, chalazia, keratoconus, contact lens use, and seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.
