Granuloma gluteale infantum arises as a complication of a preceding inflammatory skin condition treated with a variety of agents, but particularly after the use of topical corticosteroids. Postulated causes include topical halogenated corticosteroids, diapering items, candidal infection, or skin contact with urine and feces.

The condition is rare, occurring more often in male infants between 3 and 9 months of age. Lesions persist for 3–6 weeks and spontaneously regress with good diaper hygiene. Pain, secondary infection, and scarring are potential complications.
