Osteitis pubis is inflammation of the pubic symphysis and adjacent attachments caused by repetitive trauma from overuse. It is common in athletes; frequently implicated sports are those that involve running / sprinting and quick changes of motion, such as hockey, racket sports, basketball, football, and soccer. In addition to sporting activities, it can be a complication of pelvic surgery (gynecologic or urologic). Childbirth and certain rheumatologic disorders are also likely contributors to osteitis pubis. Both men and women can be affected.

The condition typically presents with vague pain in the anterior pelvis region. Pain may localize primarily to one side of the pubic area or it may be bilateral. The pain may be exacerbated by physical activity.
